Minnesota summers may be short compared with our winters, but that does not make them mild. When the temperature climbs past 90 degrees and the humidity settles in, an air conditioner that seemed fine a week ago may suddenly run for hours without making the house feel comfortable.
That does not always mean the system is broken. Your AC removes heat gradually, and extreme outdoor conditions give it much more heat and moisture to handle. Long cooling cycles can be normal during the hottest part of the day. However, if the indoor temperature keeps rising, certain rooms never cool down, or the system blows warm air, something may be limiting its performance.
Is It Normal for Your AC to Run Constantly in Extreme Heat?
During a 90-degree afternoon, normal cooling cycles may become much longer. Your air conditioner is fighting heat entering through the house while also removing moisture from humid indoor air. Because it has so much heat to manage, lowering the thermostat another five degrees will not make the air from the vents colder or cool the house faster. It only gives the equipment a more demanding target.
Instead of judging the system by run time alone, pay attention to what it accomplishes. If the house stays reasonably comfortable and begins to recover as the outdoor temperature falls, the AC may simply be working through a high-demand period. If the temperature indoors keeps climbing or never recovers in the evening, there is likely another reason the system cannot keep up.
Start With the Air Filter and Vents
When an air conditioner struggles, the simplest place to begin is with airflow. The system needs a steady volume of air moving across the indoor coil so it can absorb heat and carry cooled air back into the house. When a dirty filter restricts that movement, the AC has to run longer while delivering less comfort. If the restriction becomes severe, the coil may even begin to freeze.
Replace the filter if it is visibly dirty or overdue, making sure the new one is the correct size and faces the right direction. Since a highly restrictive filter is not appropriate for every HVAC system, ask a technician which option your equipment can support.
Once the filters are swapped, check the supply and return vents. Move furniture, rugs, and curtains out of the way, and keep the vents open even in rooms you use less often. Closing several may seem like a way to redirect cool air, but it can disrupt pressure within the duct system.
Give the Outdoor Unit Room to Work
Good airflow matters outside the house, too. The indoor portion of the system collects heat, but the outdoor unit must release that heat into the surrounding air. When cottonwood, grass clippings, leaves, or dirt cover the condenser coil, the equipment has a harder time completing that process. On a 90-degree day, even a modest loss of performance can become much more noticeable.
After turning off power to the equipment, clear away loose debris and trim back plants that crowd the cabinet. Avoid opening the unit or spraying its delicate fins with a high-pressure hose. Debris embedded in the coil is better handled during professional air conditioning service.
While you are there, confirm that the unit runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. If the indoor fan moves air but the outdoor equipment is silent, or you hear repeated buzzing or clicking, schedule an inspection rather than repeatedly resetting the breaker.
Pay Attention to Weak Airflow or Ice
If air is coming from the vents but feels unusually weak, look for other signs of a frozen evaporator coil. You might notice warmer air, water near the indoor equipment, or ice on the refrigerant line. Although ice may seem like a sign that the system is producing plenty of cold air, it actually prevents the coil from absorbing heat properly.
A dirty filter can contribute to freezing, but blower trouble or a refrigerant issue may cause it as well. If you see ice, turn off cooling and allow the system to thaw rather than chipping at it. Since thawing does not correct the underlying problem, have the system diagnosed if the ice returns or the AC still does not cool properly.
Reduce the Heat Entering Your Home
Your AC may be working correctly but losing ground because the house is gaining heat too quickly. Direct sunlight, air leaks, limited attic insulation, and leaky ducts all increase the cooling load, especially in older or remodeled Twin Cities homes.
Close blinds or curtains on sun-facing windows, and delay baking, running the dishwasher, or drying clothes until evening when possible. Ceiling fans can also make you feel up to 10 degrees cooler without requiring a lower thermostat setting.
These adjustments will not repair a mechanical problem, but they can reduce strain during the hottest hours. If one floor remains much warmer or certain rooms receive very little air, a technician can look beyond the cooling equipment and check for hidden duct or airflow problems.
Know When Your AC Needs Professional Attention
Sometimes an AC continues to run even though a worn or dirty component has reduced its capacity. Dirty coils, a weak capacitor, a failing motor, blower trouble, or an electrical issue can all limit performance. Low refrigerant can also reduce cooling, but it is not used up during normal operation. A low charge may indicate a leak.
It is time to call for service if you notice:
- Warm air or noticeably weaker airflow
- Ice on the coil or refrigerant line
- Unusual buzzing, rattling, grinding, or clicking
- Frequent starts and stops
- Water around the indoor equipment
- A sudden increase in electricity use
- An AC that runs into the evening without cooling the house
Could the Air Conditioner Be the Wrong Size?
If the system has always struggled on hot days, the issue may involve its capacity. Proper sizing depends on more than square footage because windows, insulation, air leakage, ceiling height, and ductwork all affect what a house requires.
An undersized system may run constantly and still fall behind. An oversized unit may cool quickly but shut off before removing enough humidity. Remodeling can also change what the home needs.

Should You Repair or Replace an AC That Cannot Keep Up?
Finding the cause does not automatically mean you need a new air conditioner. Many problems can be corrected through cleaning, airflow improvements, thermostat work, or a targeted repair. If the system is relatively young and dependable, repairing it may be practical.
